I get it. You work long and hard hours to provide people with a product or service and sometimes they've missed the point entirely. Let me give you an example. Most people think that cafes simply provide people with food, but that's not true. If that's what you think, you're underselling yourself. Cafes provide people with community and connection and cafes facilitate a relationship and that's the essence. That's the core of what a café provides to someone and a lot of people miss that. I truly believe that a key part to good marketing and advertising, engaging people with your brand, is utilising the power of story. Everybody connects with story. It might be the plot twist at the end of a movie or a story of young love or the risk and adventure of travel, but everybody loves stories. Stories have a way of getting past your guard. They connect with your heart. How can you tell stories to your clients? How can you use the power of story to engage people? Consider some of these questions. How have you most helped a client in the last year? What's been the most rewarding experience you've had? Why are you even in business in the first place? Consider how they might actually help you identify with your story. You see, your true need isn't actually video. It's actually clear and effective communication. It's storytelling. We're talking about first impressions. What does the first point of contact say about your business? Everyone's researching online. Everyone's verifying information online, fact-checking online, so we're talking today about website and social media. Your website is all about credibility. Can these people help me? Can they solve my problem? What kind of work do they produce? Do these people know what they're talking about? Your website wants to be credible. So you've got like a couple of seconds to grab someone's attention and say, "Yes, we can help you. Yes, we would love to help you. How can we be of assistance?" Let me give you an example of this. A friend of mine is a builder with a great personal service and a real focus on relationship with clients. He asks the right question. He takes time to listen and really cares for what the client wants. He doesn't try to give them something they don't need. It's an incredible service, but his potential customers have no idea about this. They call him up on the phone, and they're going, "Hey, can I just get a quote? All right. Cheers. Thanks. Bye." And he has this really small window because he's missed the opportunity to educate his potential customers online. There's a hole there. So think about this: what impression does your landing page give people? Is it text heavy? Is it unclear? Is it dull? We'd suggest a feature video. Come on, man. Everyone is clicking the video on the top of the page. You see it in your mind, and in your mind you're trying to click the play button. Everybody is clicking play on that video. Give people a snapshot of who you are, what you're all about, and how you can solve their problem on your website. That way, when they get on the phone to you, they've already experienced your culture, your business culture, and your passion. So when they're calling, they've been educated.       <image:title>Quick Yaks - Why you can't afford not to market</image:title>
      <image:caption>Can't afford to market? Here are some tips on why you can't afford not to market. It's a noisy market place and your business requires active marketing to ensure that you are being both seen and heard.  All right. I want to give you two reasons today why you can't afford not to market. There's lots going on. People see and interact with thousands of messages a day. We've got less time for things at the moment. I'm sure you've had an experience like me where you've been online, you've been looking for something and you'll go into a website and you'll have made up your mind in the first three to five seconds. Now, this isn't my thing. It’s like, how do you know? You've only you've only been there for three to four seconds. It's because we're so overloaded with information. One of the reasons why you can't afford not to market is that it's a really noisy marketplace and you need to work to be seen or you'll get lost in the noise so that requires a little bit of thought. The second reason that you can't afford not to market is you can have people getting on the phone, getting on e-mail, getting in touch with you, getting into meetings that are actually there for the wrong reasons. They're just there for price or they're just there because they've got this misconception about your business. The second reason why you need to market is to educate people, to tell them the things that matter most about your business so that when they come to you, they're actually … they're educated, they have a bit of an understanding. “Oh, that’s what these guys are about.” Otherwise, there's a good chance that I'm just here for price. Look, you're saying to me, “I get it, Matt. I know. I know that I should be marketing but why do we still not do it?” I think there's two reasons. The first one is often, the results of marketing are less tangible. It's harder to actually see sometimes the results. In other areas of business, it can be a bit easier like hiring a staff member, that's easy to see. Great. That's where I spend the money. I can see the results. Marketing is a little bit of a different field. Sometimes, it's less tangible and because of that, we go, “Oh, it must be less important,” but it's not. What that actually means is you actually need to be more thoughtful and more decisive about how you market and how you present yourself to the public the. Second reason is, well, it's just too much effort. I'm a business leader. I got a hundred other things to do so I'll just put my receptionist on to it and that's a really good start but an easy answer for that is to pay a professional to put a bit of work in to clarify your identity and your business brand in a way that's going to help our, one, cut through the noise and two, educate your customers about the things that matter most to you as a business. All right. We've deliberately filmed this in a busy place, a noisy place because that's the reality for us, so where do we go from here? We've got packages on our website.       <image:title>Quick Yaks - Underlying Needs</image:title>
      <image:caption>What are your customers underlying needs?  Do you understand their internal problem and how to effectively communicate the solution your provide? Alright, let's dive back into looking at your story. If you remember, a video I did just recently, we talked about story so if you want more material, go back and watch that. Today, we're gonna talk about underlying need. What I mentioned previously, was that a café doesn't just provide coffee, a café provides community and relationships and connection with people, and that's the true value that they give to customers. I wonder if you ask yourself, "What am I really providing for people?" Yes, you provide to them a product or a service, but what more than that do you actually provide them? That's the question today. You see one of the ways that we can get at this is by comparing the external and the internal problem. What tends to happen is that companies tend to sell solutions to external problems and customers tend to buy solutions to internal problems. There's actually a distinction there. Let me give you an example. The external problem is I'm hungry. The internal problem is I want to feel good about the food that I eat. So that internal problem actually drives me to a particular café. I might go to a particular café that resolves that problem. Maybe it's a paleo café, or maybe it's a whole foods café. That's the internal problem that's actually driving. Let me give you one more example. The external problem could be I need a holiday. The internal problem is I need a break, but I don't know where to go and I'm overwhelmed by Webjet. I might solve that by going to see a travel agent who establishes themselves as a guide, someone who's willing to help me find my way. Notice the distinction between people's external problem and internal problem. How does this change the way you communicate? How does this change your website? How does this change the tagline on your business cards? How does this change the videos that you make? When you actually begin to target customer's internal problems, and not their external problems, think about the examples I've just given you. Think about the travel agent who begins to communicate about the way that they're a guide for people, and the café who begins to communicate about the type of food they stock and the type of community that they provide for people, rather than just, "Come here for great coffee." People love an authentic experience, brands that are desperately trying to give people an authentic experience. Hipster cafes all across the nation are working hard to give people an authentic experience. Why even grind the coffee beans when we can put them straight in the cup? We seem to be on this manhunt for authenticity. People even, at times, subvert authenticity by saying just copy what someone else is doing and make it your own. Just do it your own way. Put your own spin on it but I think we miss the point. I don't think authenticity is as much about products and services as it is about relationships and experience. What is it that we really long for when we talk about an authentic experience? What are we longing for? Well, I think there's three elements that help give us an understanding of this. One is I think we're looking for a sincere relationship. Two, we're looking for a trustworthy guide and three, I think we're looking for practical help. A sincere relationship. We love sincerity. We love it when people are transparent. They're honest, when they are themselves. On the opposite of that, we don't like fake. We don't like facade. We’re looking for someone who can stop, listen, care and understand. All right, number two, a trustworthy guide. We want someone that we can trust to guide us, so say I've got a problem. I can't keep the weeds out of my lawn. What am I doing? In my head, I'm going, “All right, I need to go and find someone who can help me. I’m going to go to the garden centre or I'm going to go to the hardware store and I'm going to ask someone for help.” One of the bigger questions there is can I trust you? Can I trust you to lead? Well, can I trust your recommendations? Can I trust your experience? People are looking for a trustworthy guide. Number three is we're looking for practical help. At the end of the day, you need to give them practical help. This is why it's so necessary that you're convinced about your product and service. If you're a salesman, if that's your role or you're a marketer and you don't actually believe in the company that you work for, I feel really sorry for you because that's going to be really difficult. If you're not convinced that what you offer is something really valuable and it's going to change people's lives, it's going to help solve the pain and their problems, then you've got a really tough job on yourself because you're lying to yourself. “I don't actually believe that this is what people need but I'm a marketer so I'm supposed to convince people,” but practical help. Is what you're offering people genuinely going to help them? Is it what they need? Is it going to solve their problems? Are you convinced of that? If you are, then you've got a great underlying hope for all of your conversation for all of your communication, for all of your marketing. I genuinely believe you'll be benefited from this. Wrapping those three up, people want a sincere relationship, a trustworthy guide and a practical help. Those are components of an authentic experience. Where is that coming through in your communication? As always, of course, we would recommend, video is a great way to communicate humanity, personality. People can see in video. They can see facial expression. They can see and hear a person. They can see tone. They can see posture. They can see elements subconsciously that you don't see in an article or on radio or in photography or in other sort of forms of marketing. To explore that a little further, we want to talk about your ideal client. You can't win everyone. The myth of marketing is that you can win everyone, but you just can't. There's going to be people that you work better, that benefit more greatly from your products or services, that you have a better relationship with, and that is an ideal client. In thinking about your ideal client, think about how they are and what they're like. Where do they like to shop? What sort of demographic are they? What's their family status like? You're trying to gain a bit of a picture of who exactly that might be. Let me give you an example. You might be a hospitality service that provides meals for people. Your ideal client, as you begin to workshop this, might be the young, active mom who's on the run, she's busy, she's into fitness sort of scene, and your service works really well to her, and her demographic, and her family situation. That would be your ideal client. The next question you're asking straight away is: How does that change how we communicate? How does that change our online spaces where we are online? How does that change the language that we use? How does that change the way that we communicate, the way that we present ourselves? Let me give you an example. Snapchat, we all know is predominantly under 25. There's a growing adult market from Snapchat, which I think is ridiculous, but it's mostly young people. If you want to reach teenagers, where do you think you're going? You're getting on Snapchat, and you're connecting, and you're engaging in that environment. If you want to talk more, naturally, we'd love to chip in where we can to your business to looking at who your ideal client is and how you can actually communicate and engage with them more effectively.
